Course organizer

Born in England, I set up my workshop in La Borne after a 7 year apprenticeship, beginning with the Studio Pottery course at Harrow Art school in London then working with David Leach in Devon and potters in Switzerland, Belgium,  France and Japan .
The journey overland to Japan in 1973-1974 and a 4-month stay with a traditional potter in Machiko  has greatly contributed  to my sources of inspiration and my vision of the world ever since.
I was initially attracted by the magic of wood firing; this is my "raison d'être" for living and working in la Borne.
Trained as a craft potter, I enjoy making objects for daily use: tea-pots, jugs, large  dishes etc, a production of stoneware and porcelain fired in a catenary arch kiln of 1 cubic metre. I find the surfaces, fired with wood and lightly salt-glazed, satisfy my search to enhance the natural qualities of the clay.
After 17 years teaching at an art school in Saint-Amand-Montrond, I have found a new interest to explore through coiling. This allows  forms to "grow" influenced by shapes in surrounding nature. I use mainly slips on the outside surfaces and ash glazes inside. The wood-firing gives what the japanese call the  "yoan" - the extra sparkle, or “gift” to the piece.
I propose 2 different type of courses, one for beginners :  "Discovering  ceramics in la Borne"  and the second: " Improve your throwing skills " for people who have some basic throwing knowledge and wish to work on a specific shape. This course can be organised to suit the requirements of the student.
A third course is in preparation with  the building of a small wood kiln.
